“The series depicts fragmentary impressions of Hong Kong that emerge through a layering of collaged photographs and textured paint. The paintings celebrate the seemingly mundane elements and artifacts that unconsciously shape the character and experience of the city. Through the surreal juxtaposition of these city fragments, the paintings distill a series of “flavours” of Hong Kong.”, says Anca. Anca Matyiku was born in Romania, where she spent the earlier part of her childhood before moving to Canada. She studied Architecture in Waterloo, Ontario, and has spent the past 5 years living and studying in different cities around the world. Her background in Architecture and experience with design, has adversely, inspired a taste for the undesigned, and indeliberate natures of cities, which underlines most of her artistic and photographic work. Her work focuses on the idiosyncratic, almost quirky nature of cities, highlighting the often overlooked artefacts and corners where the evidence of culture grows and accumulates into unpredictable and often characteristic descriptions of the city.

“The project explores the sensation of living in an environment, that is simultaneously visually stimulating and oppressive. The glamorous skylines and the existential overshadowing seem to leave a viewer in a position of tension as shimmering reflections, stress and visual stimulation dominate our visual landscape and therefore necessarily have an influence on our psychological disposition as we may feel pride and isolation in equal amounts by adopting an identity of HK city-dweller. Or, to put it more simply, it's about how our buildings cause an emotional response.”, says Nathan. Nathan King grew up in Africa where he studied Psychology for many years before moving to the UK and exploring a more expressive medium of analysis: Photography. Fascination with human emotions and cognition still permeat his work as it has become increasingly intimate and abstract in nature. His professional background is best described as diverse, having pointed his lens at many subjects in different continents around the globe before eventually arriving in Hong Kong.
